Wine & Spirits 2018

Tasting review by Wine & Spirits 2018:

In “Year’s Best Northeast Italy & Slovenia,” the Wine & Spirits panel blind-tasted 327 new-release Northeast Italy & Slovenia wines over the past 12 months, and Italy critic Stephanie Johnson recommends

92 pointsRACHTL Sauvignon Blanc Riserva 2015
“Reductive notes blow off to reveal appealing scents of lemongrass and lime blossom, and zesty citrus flavors that drive this wine forward. Half of the wine ferments and ages in tonneaux, the rest in large wood barrels, giving it a round and weighty presence without any oak-derived flavors. The fruit notes evolve into mandarin orange and honey-drizzled grapefruit, with lingering pink-peppercorn scents on the finish.”

92 pointsFELDMARSCHALL VON FENNER Müller Thurgau 2016
“The vines that produce fruit for this wine cling to a south-facing slope at more than 3,200 feet above sea level, where cool evening temperatures preserve crisp acidity in the fruit. The grapes rest on the skins for a short time before fermenting in large wood barrels and stainless-steel tanks, developing rich flavors of pineapple and fleshy peach accented in notes of ginger and brown spices. Cool acidity balances the wine’s creamsicle texture and the rich flavors that persist on the finish.”

87 pointsClassic MERUS Pinot Bianco 2017 (Best Buy)
“A touch of orange zest brightens this wine’s flavors of green apple and pear. It has a natural fruit sweetness that makes it easy to drink with or without food.”

87 points |  Pinot Grigio 2017 (Best Buy)
“Juicy white-peach flavors cut through this wine’s creamy texture, leading to a mild, nutty finish.”
